Mental Health Support for Women and Where to Find Them

2 min Read

Mental health is a crucial part of our overall well-being, yet it often goes unaddressed or overlooked, especially in women's health.

Thankfully, there are numerous resources available for women seeking support for mental health issues ranging from anxiety and depression to trauma and postpartum depression.

Here's a guide to some vital resources for women seeking mental health support.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services - Office on Women’s Health (OWH)

For women grappling with mental health conditions, abuse, trauma, or postpartum depression, the Office on Women’s Health provides a wealth of information.

They host a resource line (OWH HELPLINE - 1-800-994-9662, available Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm ET) that offers guidance and information. It's important to note that this is not an emergency line.

In case of an emergency, calling 911 or heading to the nearest emergency room is advised.

National Institute of Mental Health - Women and Mental Health

This organization offers brochures, fact sheets, videos, and a slew of links to federal resources focused on mental health issues that affect women

It's a great starting point for those looking to understand the spectrum of mental health challenges and the specific ways they can manifest in women.

National Child & Maternal Health Education Program - Depression and Anxiety Around Pregnancy

Understanding mental health around pregnancy is crucial for expectant or new mothers.

This government program provides valuable insights into depression and anxiety experienced during this pivotal time through resources available on their website and a helpful video on YouTube.

Therapy for Black Girls

An online space dedicated to encouraging the mental wellness of Black women and girls, Therapy for Black Girls features a blog, a mental health provider directory, and a weekly podcast.

The podcast is a great resource for discussions on mental health, personal development, and more, available through various platforms including Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

California Black Women’s Health Project - Sisters Mentally Mobilized

An initiative that trains Black women to become mental health community advocates, Sisters Mentally Mobilized focuses on creating safe, healing spaces for Black women through Sister Circles.

It's a movement aimed at fostering a statewide community of support and advocacy for the mental well-being of Black women.

Mental Health America - Depression in Women

Offering signs, symptoms, and links to external resources, Mental Health America provides vital information for women who may be dealing with depression. This resource serves as both an educational tool and a gateway to further support for those in need.

Postpartum Support International (PSI)

PSI works to raise awareness about the emotional changes women undergo during pregnancy and postpartum.

While they do not handle emergencies, they offer a helpline (1-800-944-4773 English, or text “Help” to 800-944-4773 for English and 971-203-7773 for Spanish) and various resources in California, including support groups, telephone support, and free service events.
