How Can You Get Affordable Birth Control

Since a Supreme Court decision in 2020 allowed employers to opt out of covering birth control, and considering that 19 million people live in areas where it's tough to get contraceptives, finding affordable birth control has become harder for many.

However, there are still ways to get birth control for little to no cost.

How Much Is Birth Control Usually?

The cost can vary based on:

  • Your location
  • Your insurance status
  • The type of birth control you choose
  • Your income, as some government programs can help if you earn less

If you have insurance, you might pay nothing to $250 a year (or $0 to $20 a month). Without insurance, the cost could be $200 to $600 per year ($20 to $50 per month), unless you qualify for Medicaid or other government aids.

Where to Find Birth Control

For Those With and Without Insurance:

  • Local Health Departments: These can often guide you towards the most effective birth control methods and help you get them. An appointment might cost $10 to $25.
  • Planned Parenthood: They accept Medicaid and most insurance plans. If you’re not insured, they may still offer birth control at a reduced cost based on your income.
  • Nonprofit Organizations: Some organizations provide affordable birth control to everyone, regardless of insurance status.
  • College Health Centers: Many higher education institutions offer cheaper birth control for students.
  • LGBTQIA+ Centers: Some centers provide family planning services or can direct you to places that do.

If You Prefer Online Options

If visiting a clinic in person is difficult for you, telemedicine might be a good solution. As long as you have internet access and a mailing address or can go to a pharmacy, you can get birth control online.

Looking for Additional Support?

Sometimes, places like Walmart might offer birth control at lower prices. This means that there are options available, no matter your insurance situation.

Remember, affordable birth control is out there; you might need to do a bit of research based on your specific circumstances, but it's attainable.
